WA GETS A POGNAA

The chiefs and people of Wa in the Waala Traditional Area of the Upper West Region outdoored 72-year-old trader, Hajia Fati Imoru Gberikubo as Pognaa at a colorful today [14^th July 14, 2018].
The installation of Hajia Fati Imoru Gberikubo, whose stool name is Pognaa Hajia Fati Imoru Gberikubo, was performed by the chiefs and elders of Wa.
The ceremony was supervised by His majesty Wa Naa Fuseini Seidu Pelpuo IV, the chief of Wa, who said that women play very pivotal roles in the socio-economic development of the community.
The ceremony which started a little after 10am saw the chiefs of the traditional area showcased their rich culture. The beating of the drums complemented with music performance by Dancing Groups attracted the traditional authorities, opinion leaders, among others to the dancing floor.
Reading her speech on her behalf by the Pognaa of Duori Amamata Mumuni, Pognaa Hajia Fati Imoru Gberikubo said she would use her position to advance education, especially that of the girl-child.

“In my action plan my vision will be centered on the Girl-Child Education. When I thought of this, I had listened to people’s complaints about the fallen standard of Education in this part of the country and the Girl-Child drop out is the highest.’’
She seeks the indulgence of chiefs, NGOs and civil society organizations to collaborate in order to reduce the challenge. “I will therefore seek the indulgence of chiefs, partners from the NGO class, the Christian Mothers Association, the Federation of Muslim Women Association (FOMWAG), World Vision and Plan Ghana. We will collaborate with the GES and Ministry of Gender and Children Affairs to reduce this challenge to the barest minimum,’’ she added.
She also urged stakeholders to collaborate and fight outmoded cultural practices. “One most harmful cultural practice in our area is the female genital mutilation. This practice has suffered a lot of condemnation world over, so I will entreat all Paramount Chiefs, Pognamine, Haala Kuoro, the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection in collaboration with other agencies and stakeholders to fight this cultural menace out of our society completely.’’
Pognaa Hajia Fati Imoru Gberikubo also called on chiefs and Tendamba’s to assist women to have access to land for farming and job creation.
The ceremony was attended by personalities such as the regional minister, Alhaji Alhassan Suleman, Madam Charity Batuure, Regional Director-Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection and the Wa Municipal Chief Executive Issahaku Tahiru Moomen.
